In short: choose on evidence, not claims. A good provider diagnoses your site before proposing work, leaves your accounts in your name, earns links rather than buying them, reports on enquiries as well as rankings, and never guarantees a position on Google.
Every SEO provider in Kenya describes itself as results-driven and experienced. None of that can be checked from a homepage. What you can check is how a provider thinks about your business, what they ask before quoting, and what they will commit to in writing.
We sell SEO, so read this with that in mind. The checks below are the same ones we would want a client to apply to us.

Before You Contact Anyone
Write a one-page brief. Providers answering the same brief can be compared; providers answering different questions cannot.
- The outcome you want: more calls, more online sales, more bookings
- The services and towns that matter most commercially
- What you have tried before, and what happened
- Who will make changes to the website
- A budget range and a time horizon
If you have not decided whether SEO is right for you yet, read whether SEO is worth it for a small business first. And if you are still new to the subject, our guide to SEO in Kenya explains what the work involves.
Ten Checks That Separate Good Providers
1. They diagnose before they quote
A capable provider looks at your site first and asks about your indexing, traffic, competitors and sales process. Ask: what would you check first on our site, and what do you expect to find? The quality of that answer, before any money moves, tells you more than any case study.
2. You keep ownership of everything
| Asset | Who should own it |
| Website, domain and hosting | Your business |
| Google Search Console | Your business, provider given access |
| Google Analytics | Your business, provider given access |
| Google Business Profile | Your business, provider as manager |
| Content, audits and keyword documents | Your business |
A provider who wants these in their own account is asking you to lose your history when you leave. Decline.
3. They can explain technical work
Ask how they diagnose indexing problems, handle redirects during a redesign, and improve page speed. If the answers are vague, the provider probably only does content and links. Our technical SEO checklist lists what a competent answer should cover.
4. The content process has real people in it
Who writes, who edits, and how does your team’s knowledge get into the page? Fixed monthly article counts with no research behind them are a warning sign. Good content starts from keyword research tied to your services.
5. They earn links, and say how
Ask directly: do you ever pay for links? Acceptable answers include digital PR, partnerships, sponsorships, industry associations and accurate directory listings. Private blog networks and bulk directory submissions breach Google’s spam policies, and the risk becomes yours.
6. They understand local search
If you serve particular towns, ask how they would handle your Google Business Profile, categories, reviews and location pages. Proposing dozens of near-identical town pages for places you do not serve is a red flag.
7. Reports show enquiries, not just positions
Every monthly report should answer: what was done, what changed, and what happens next. It should include impressions and clicks from Search Console, calls and form enquiries, and technical fixes completed, not just a list of rankings for easy branded searches.
8. They are honest about time
SEO usually shows early signals in two to three months and enquiry growth after six. A provider promising page one in 30 days is either lucky or cutting corners. Compare what they tell you with our guide on how long SEO takes in Kenya.
9. They mention ads where ads make sense
If you need customers next month, an honest provider will tell you that Google Ads may fit better in the short term, even if it means a smaller SEO contract.
10. The contract is clear
Check the monthly scope in outputs, the minimum term and notice period, what happens to your content and access if you leave, and who approves changes to your website.
Red Flags
- A guaranteed ranking, traffic figure or “page one in 30 days”
- Refusal to give you admin access to your own accounts
- Methods they will not explain
- Pressure to sign a long contract before any analysis
- A price far below every other quote, with no clear list of what is delivered
- No questions about your business before proposing work
What Should It Cost?
Published SEO packages in Kenya run from about KES 8,000 to over KES 200,000 a month, and the packages count different things. Our guide to SEO cost in Kenya compares what several agencies publish. Donvic’s own SEO packages are KES 30,000, KES 50,000 or from KES 80,000 a month.
If you want an independent view before committing to anyone, a one-off SEO audit from KES 25,000 gives you a prioritised fix list you keep, whoever you hire.
Agency, Freelancer or In-House?
| Option | Strengths | Trade-offs |
| Agency | Mixed skills, continuity, capacity | Costs more; check who actually does the work |
| Freelancer | Focused, direct contact | Limited capacity, holidays, continuity |
| In-house | Knows the business, always available | Hard to hire, tools cost extra, skill gaps |
| Hybrid | Your team executes, an expert guides | Needs internal discipline |

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I choose the best SEO company in Kenya?
Compare providers on how they diagnose your site, their technical and content processes, how they earn links, their reporting and whether you keep ownership of your accounts. Treat any ranking guarantee as a reason to walk away.
Should I hire an SEO agency or a freelancer in Kenya?
A freelancer suits focused work such as an audit or a Business Profile setup. An agency suits ongoing work across technical, content and local SEO, or when continuity matters. Judge both on method and contract terms.
What questions should I ask an SEO company?
Ask what they would fix first and why, who does the work, how they earn links, what reports include, whether you own all accounts and data, the notice period, and what results are realistic by when.
Can an SEO company guarantee first-page rankings?
No. Google says no one can guarantee a top position, and results change constantly. A provider can commit to specific work, methods and reporting, not to a ranking.
How much should I pay an SEO company in Kenya?
Published monthly packages range from about KES 8,000 to over KES 200,000. Donvic charges KES 30,000, KES 50,000 or from KES 80,000 a month. Compare deliverables, not headline fees.
