Quick answer: List your services in the words customers use, combine them with the places you genuinely serve, check those combinations against Google’s autocomplete and your own Search Console data, look at what competitors rank for, then give each distinct search one clear page on your website.
Local keyword research usually fails in one of two ways. Either it invents locations the business does not serve, or it produces a spreadsheet that never becomes pages. This method avoids both, uses free tools, and ends with a page plan you can build from. For the general method beyond local searches, see our guide to keyword research for a Kenyan business.

Step 1: Write Your Services in Customer Language
| What you call it | What customers type |
| Preventive dental care | dental cleaning |
| HVAC maintenance contracts | air conditioner servicing |
| Integrated facilities management | office cleaning services |
| Freight forwarding solutions | clearing and forwarding agent |
Ask reception and sales what people actually ask for, and read your WhatsApp enquiries. Those words are your starting list.
Step 2: List the Places You Really Serve
Kenyan local searches happen at several levels: county (Mombasa, Kiambu), town (Thika, Malindi), estate or suburb (Nyali, Westlands, Kilimani, Bamburi) and landmark (“near Sarit”, “near Nyali Bridge”).
Be honest about coverage. Build a page only where you have premises or a real service commitment. Everywhere else belongs in a service-area description, as our guide to service area pages explains.
Step 3: Combine, Then Prune
| Pattern | Example |
| Service + town | car hire Mombasa |
| Service + suburb | salon Nyali |
| Service + “near me” | plumber near me |
| Problem + location | blocked drain Kilimani |
| Service + landmark | clinic near Sarit |
| Service + qualifier + town | 24 hour pharmacy Nairobi |
Do not build a page for every combination. Most suburbs belong on the town page.
Step 4: Check Real Search Behaviour
Open a private browser window and type your terms.
- Autocomplete shows the phrases people really use
- People Also Ask gives you questions the page should answer
- Related searches show nearby demand
- The map pack tells you whether Google treats the search as local
No map pack and no local results usually means the search is not local at all, which changes the page you should build. Our guide to search intent explains how to read the results page.
Step 5: Use Your Own Search Console Data
If you already have a website, this is the best source you own.
- Open Google Search Console, Performance report
- Set the last twelve months and filter by country: Kenya
- Sort queries by impressions
- Look for place names, “near me” and services you offer
- Note queries with impressions but few clicks, usually a weak title or no matching page
Searches where you already get impressions but have no dedicated page are your fastest wins, because Google already connects you with the topic.
Step 6: Look at Competitors
Check who appears in the map pack and the organic results for your priority searches. Which services have their own pages? How are their location pages built? What questions do they answer? You are looking for searches where the current results are weak or generic.
Step 7: Sort by Intent
| Intent | Example | Best page |
| Ready to buy, local | emergency plumber Mombasa | Service or location page |
| Comparing options | best schools in Nyali | Comparison guide |
| Looking for information | land rates in Kilifi | Blog guide |
| Looking for you | Donvic Marketing Mombasa | Home or contact page |
| Near me | hardware near me | Google Business Profile plus location page |
“Near me” searches are answered mainly by your Google Business Profile, not by repeating “near me” in page text. Our Google Business Profile optimisation guide covers the profile side.
Step 8: Give Each Search One Page
| Page | Main search | Supporting searches | Status |
| /services/roof-repair/ | roof repair Mombasa | leaking roof repair, roof waterproofing | Exists |
| /locations/nyali/ | roof repair Nyali | roofing contractor Nyali | To build |
| /blog/roof-leaks-rainy-season/ | roof leaks rainy season Kenya | how to prevent roof leaks | To build |
One main search per page, and never two pages chasing the same one; that problem is called keyword cannibalisation. Our guide to keyword mapping shows how to keep the plan tidy as it grows.
Step 9: Decide What to Build First
Score each opportunity on commercial value (would this search produce a customer?), achievability (can you compete now?) and effort. Start where value and achievability are high and effort is low. That is usually your existing service pages plus one or two genuine location pages.
Where Local Research Goes Wrong
- Building pages for every Kenyan county, whether you serve it or not
- Chasing big national searches while ignoring local ones that convert
- Ignoring the Search Console data you already have
- Separate pages for singular and plural versions
- A spreadsheet with no page plan attached
Frequently Asked Questions
What is local keyword research?
Finding the searches people in your area use to look for your services, usually a service combined with a town, suburb or “near me”, and matching each to one page on your website.
What free tools can I use for local keyword research in Kenya?
Google autocomplete, People Also Ask, related searches, the map pack and Google Search Console. Together they show real search behaviour without paid tools.
Should I create a page for every town?
No. Create pages only where you have premises or genuinely serve customers. Near-copies with swapped town names risk being treated as spam.
How do I target “near me” searches?
Mainly through a complete Google Business Profile with accurate categories and location. Your website should support it with clear location details, not by repeating “near me”.
How many keywords should one page target?
One main search, plus closely related variations. Different intents need different pages.
Turn the Plan Into Visibility
Keywords only help once they become pages, and pages rank best alongside the rest of local SEO: genuine reviews, consistent citations and the steps in our local SEO checklist.
