How to Optimize for Google AI Overviews

Quick answer: To appear in Google AI Overviews, a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in Google Search, and your site must be included in the Search generative AI setting in Search Console. Beyond that, Google says there are no special requirements: helpful, original content, a clear technical structure and accurate business information do the work. Appearance is never guaranteed.

That answer is shorter than most guides on the subject, because Google’s own documentation is short. What follows is what Google has actually published, what it means in practice and which popular tactics it says you can skip.

how to optimize for AI overviews

What AI Overviews Are, and When They Appear

An AI Overview is the AI-written summary that sometimes appears at the top of Google’s results, with links to the pages that support it. Google says they are designed “to show up on queries where they can add additional benefits beyond what people might already get on Search”.

Two details shape any strategy:

  • They often do not appear. Google says AI Overviews “are only shown when our systems determine that it is additive to classic Search, and as such, often don’t trigger.” Plenty of commercial searches still show normal results only.
  • They are not the same as AI Mode. Google’s AI Mode is a separate, conversational experience for longer questions, and Google says the two “may use different models and techniques”. A page can appear in one and not the other.

Step 1: Meet the Eligibility Rules

Google’s AI features documentation sets out one technical requirement: to be shown as a supporting link, “a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet”. It adds: “There are no additional technical requirements.”

In 2026 there is one more setting to know. Search Console now has a Search generative AI control under Settings, rolled out to all sites worldwide by 31 August 2026. It has three options: include your site in AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover’s AI features (the default), exclude it, or inherit the setting from a parent property. Google’s help page confirms that excluding a site means its links and content will not appear in those features.

Check now:

  1. Open Search Console and confirm your property’s Search generative AI setting is set to include.
  2. Use URL Inspection on your most important pages to confirm they are indexed.
  3. Make sure those pages do not carry nosnippet or a very low max-snippet value.

If pages are not being indexed at all, fix that first; our guide to why a website does not show on Google covers the usual causes.

Step 2: Get the Search Foundations Right

Google lists the SEO fundamentals it considers “worthwhile” for AI features:

  • Crawling allowed in robots.txt “and by any CDN or hosting infrastructure”
  • Content easy to find through internal links
  • A good page experience
  • Important content available in text
  • Supporting images and video where they help
  • Structured data that matches the visible text
  • Merchant Center and Business Profile information kept up to date

None of these is new. That is the point Google keeps making: AI Overviews are “rooted in our core Search ranking and quality systems”. A page that performs well in ordinary search is the page most likely to be retrieved for an AI Overview. Our technical SEO checklist covers the foundations in full.

For local businesses, the last item deserves attention. Google says AI responses can include local business information, and that keeping your Google Business Profile accurate helps your services appear in AI responses and other results.

Step 3: Write Pages Worth Citing

AI Overviews are built by retrieving pages and summarising what they say, a process Google calls grounding. Our explainer on RAG and search grounding covers it in detail. The practical upshot is that the page has to contain something worth using.

Google’s guide to generative AI features calls this “non-commodity content”. It contrasts a generic article such as “7 Tips for First-Time Homebuyers” with a first-hand account of a specific decision. The first adds little; the second offers something only its author could.

For a Kenyan business that translates into:

  • Your own prices and timeframes, stated on the page
  • Your process, step by step, as you actually do it
  • Local specifics: areas served, delivery zones, how to reach you
  • First-hand evidence: photos of real work, your own data, named staff

Google also says it may run several related searches, known as query fan-out, to build one Overview. Pages that cover the questions around a topic are more likely to be retrieved for one of them. That does not mean creating a page per question; Google treats pages made for every query variation as scaled content abuse.

Want your key pages reviewed against Google’s guidance? We will check eligibility, the Search Console AI setting and whether your content gives an Overview anything to cite. Improve your Google visibility.

Step 4: Help Google Find Your Best Pages

Google lists internal links as a fundamental for AI features. Link to your most useful pages from related pages, using anchor text that says what the reader will find. A detailed pricing or process page that sits three clicks deep with no links pointing to it is easy for any crawler to undervalue. Our internal linking guide explains how.

Step 5: Use Structured Data for What It Does

Structured data is useful, but its role in AI Overviews is often overstated. Google’s position is clear:

  • It is not required for generative AI features.
  • There is “no special schema.org structured data” you need to add.
  • It is still a good idea for rich results, and it must match the visible text on the page.

So keep using Organization, LocalBusiness, Product or Article markup where it genuinely describes the page. Ignore anyone selling “AI Overview schema”.

Step 6: Decide What Google May Show

Some businesses want to limit what Google displays from their pages. Google’s controls are the standard snippet controls:

ControlWhat it does
nosnippetNo text snippet from the page is shown, including in AI features
data-nosnippetExcludes a specific section of the page from snippets
max-snippetLimits the length of text that can be shown
noindexRemoves the page from Search entirely
Search generative AI settingIncludes or excludes the whole site from AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover AI features

Note that nosnippet applies across Search, not only to AI features, so it will affect your ordinary listings too. Google-Extended, the robots.txt token for Gemini, does not affect AI Overviews: Google says it “does not impact a site’s inclusion in Google Search”. Changes take time to apply; Google says recrawling can take from several days to several months.

Step 7: Measure What You Can

Google now gives site owners two views:

  • The Generative AI performance report in Search Console shows how often links to your site appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode, grouped by page, country, device and date. It reports impressions, not clicks. See Google’s report documentation.
  • The ordinary Performance report includes AI Overview traffic within the Web search type. Google’s help centre explains that a click on a link in an AI Overview counts as a click, and that an AI Overview occupies a single position, with every link inside it given that position.

Google also says that when people click through from results pages with AI Overviews, “these clicks are higher quality”, meaning visitors tend to spend more time on the site. That is Google’s claim; track enquiries in GA4 to see whether it holds for you. Our Search Console guide walks through the reports.

Myths About AI Overviews

These come straight from Google’s list of things you do not need to do for its AI search features:

MythWhat Google says
You need an llms.txt fileGoogle Search ignores it; it neither helps nor harms
You must “chunk” pages into small sectionsNot required; Google understands pages covering several topics
You need to rewrite content for AINot needed; the systems understand synonyms and meaning
You should get mentioned on as many sites as possibleSeeking inauthentic mentions “isn’t as helpful as it might seem”
Special schema gets you into AI OverviewsNo special schema exists; structured data is not required
A tool can show your AI Overview “ranking score”No third-party tool has access to Google’s internal systems

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get my website into Google AI Overviews?

Make sure your pages are indexed and eligible to show a snippet, confirm Search Console’s Search generative AI setting includes your site, and publish helpful, original content with clear facts. Google says there are no other special requirements, and inclusion is never guaranteed.

Do I need schema markup to appear in AI Overviews?

No. Google says structured data is not required for its generative AI features and there is no special schema to add. Structured data is still useful for rich results, as long as it matches the visible page.

Can I stop my site appearing in AI Overviews?

Yes. Set the Search generative AI control in Search Console to exclude your site. Google says this removes your links and content from AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover’s AI features, usually within one to two days, without affecting ordinary search rankings.

How do I see if my site appears in AI Overviews?

Use the Generative AI performance report in Search Console. It shows impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, device and date. Clicks from AI features are counted in the normal Performance report under the Web search type.

Why does Google not show an AI Overview for my keyword?

Google only shows AI Overviews when its systems judge them additive to normal results, and says they “often don’t trigger”. Many commercial and local searches show ordinary results without an Overview.
