Key Takeaways
- RAG and grounding describe the same idea: an AI tool searches for pages and writes its answer from what they say, instead of relying only on what it memorised during training.
- Grounding runs on search. Google says its AI features retrieve pages using its core Search ranking systems. If you do not rank for anything related, you are unlikely to be retrieved.
- Training and grounding are separate. Blocking a training crawler does not stop grounding in search, and the controls for each are different.
- Grounding rewards fresh, specific, clearly written facts, because those are what the model can actually use.
- It reduces errors but does not remove them. Accurate pages make misstatements less likely; they cannot prevent them.

What RAG Means
RAG stands for retrieval-augmented generation. The name describes the steps:
- Retrieval: the system searches for documents relevant to the question.
- Augmented: those documents are added to what the model is given to work with.
- Generation: the model writes an answer using them.
Without retrieval, a language model can only draw on patterns it learned during training, which may be months or years old and cannot be checked. With retrieval, it can work from current pages and point to them.
What Grounding Means
Grounding is the result: an answer anchored to specific sources. Google treats the two terms as one. Its guide to generative AI features describes RAG as a technique “also known as grounding” that improves “the quality, accuracy, and freshness of AI responses by relying on our core Search ranking systems to retrieve relevant, up-to-date web pages from our Search index.”
It then describes what happens next: Google’s systems “review the specific information from those retrieved pages to generate a more reliable and helpful response, showing prominent, clickable links to relevant web pages that support the information in the response.”
In marketing terms: grounding is how your page becomes a cited source.
Where the Search Index Comes In
The most useful thing for a marketer to understand is that grounding sits on top of search. It does not replace it.
- Google grounds AI Overviews and AI Mode in its Search index, retrieved by its core ranking systems.
- Microsoft grounds Copilot’s answers in Bing. Bing’s AI Performance report even shows a sample of “grounding queries”, the phrases its AI used when retrieving pages that were then cited.
- ChatGPT search and Perplexity use their own search systems, fed by their own crawlers, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot.
So the first question is always an SEO one: is your page in the index, and would it rank for questions related to your business? If not, there is nothing to ground on. Our guide to how AI search engines find and cite websites traces every step before grounding, and our explainer on query fan-out shows how Google widens retrieval with related searches.

Training Versus Grounding
These two get mixed up constantly, and the difference matters for your robots.txt.
| Training | Grounding | |
| When it happens | Before the model is released | At the moment someone asks a question |
| What it does | Teaches the model general patterns | Supplies current pages to answer a specific question |
| Links back to you | No | Yes, usually as citations |
| OpenAI control | GPTBot | OAI-SearchBot |
| Google control | Google-Extended (for Gemini models) | Googlebot plus the Search generative AI setting |
The controls are independent. OpenAI’s crawler documentation says you can allow OAI-SearchBot “to appear in search results while disallowing GPTBot”. Google says its Google-Extended token governs training for Gemini models and grounding in Gemini Apps and Vertex AI, but “does not impact a site’s inclusion in Google Search nor is it used as a ranking signal”.
For Google Search itself, the control is the Search generative AI setting in Search Console. Google’s help page says that excluding your site means your content “won’t be eligible to be used as an input to generate an AI response” in AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover’s AI features. Inclusion is the default. For most businesses that want visibility, leaving it on is the right choice.
Why Freshness Matters More
Grounding exists partly to keep answers current, which gives up-to-date pages an advantage.
- Keep facts current. Prices, opening hours, fees and policies that change should be updated on the page as soon as they change. A grounded answer that quotes last year’s price reflects badly on you.
- Show dates. A visible “last updated” date helps readers judge currency.
- Tell search engines about changes. Keep your sitemap’s last-modified dates accurate. For Bing, and therefore Copilot, IndexNow lets your site notify search engines when pages are added, updated or deleted; major WordPress SEO plugins include it.
Remember that recrawling is not instant. Google says it can take from several days to several months depending on the page.
What Makes a Page Good Grounding Material
When a model reviews a retrieved page, it can only use what is there in readable form. Pages that ground well tend to share a few traits:
- The answer is stated, not implied. “Assessment costs KES 2,500 and takes 45 minutes” is usable. “Contact us for pricing” is not.
- Important information is in text. Google lists “making sure that important content is available in textual form” among the fundamentals for AI features. Prices in images, menus in PDFs and details behind tabs are harder to use.
- Sources are shown. When you state a fact that came from elsewhere, link to the source, as you would for a reader.
- The content is first-hand. Google keeps stressing non-commodity content: experience and detail that go beyond what is already everywhere. A page that repeats common knowledge adds nothing to an answer that already has ten such pages to draw from.

The Limits of Grounding
Grounding makes answers more reliable. It does not make them perfect, and it helps to be clear about that with your team and your clients.
- The model still paraphrases. It may shorten, combine or reword what your page says, and occasionally get it wrong.
- You do not choose the sources. Your page competes with every other retrieved page.
- Citation is not guaranteed. Google says indexing and serving are never guaranteed, even when every requirement is met.
- Your controls are coarse. Snippet controls such as nosnippet and max-snippet limit what Google can show from a page, but they apply to all of Search, not only AI features.
The practical response is the same as for any search: make the accurate version of the facts easy to find, current and consistent everywhere.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is grounding in AI search?
Grounding is when an AI search tool retrieves web pages and writes its answer from what those pages say, then links to them. Google describes retrieval-augmented generation as a technique also known as grounding.
What is the difference between RAG and grounding?
RAG, retrieval-augmented generation, is the method: retrieve documents, then generate an answer using them. Grounding is the result: an answer anchored to those sources. Google uses the two terms interchangeably.
Does blocking GPTBot stop ChatGPT from citing my site?
No. GPTBot is OpenAI’s training crawler. ChatGPT search uses OAI-SearchBot, and OpenAI says the two settings are independent. To appear in ChatGPT search answers, allow OAI-SearchBot.
How do I make my website better for AI grounding?
Get your pages indexed, state key facts clearly in text, keep them up to date, show sources and add first-hand detail. Grounding draws on search results, so ordinary SEO is the foundation.
Can I stop Google using my content in AI Overviews?
Yes. Search Console’s Search generative AI setting lets you exclude your site from AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover’s AI features. Google says exclusion takes effect within one to two days, though some content can take longer.
